<Information> NTT Com to Launch Multipoint Video Conferencing Service via VPN

TOKYO, JAPAN - NTT Communications (NTT Com) announced today that it will launch a high-quality video conferencing service in Japan on January 20. The solution will combine a cloud-based multipoint control unit (MCU) with NTT Com’s world-class virtual private network connections, branded Arcstar™ IP-VPN and e-VLAN, to realize a highly economical and secure system for multipoint video conferencing.

Companies in Japan with dispersed operations are introducing video conferencing systems to cut costs and accelerate decision-making, as well as to ensure business continuity at all times, even during pandemics or other emergencies. The high initial costs and cumbersome set-up of conventional video conferencing systems, however, have prevented some companies from taking advantage of these systems’ many benefits.

Thanks to NTT Com’s new service, customers now can introduce video conference systems quickly and easily, and for a much lower initial cost. The MCU, a high-cost piece of hardware if purchased outright, is offered as a cloud-based solution via NTT Com’s Application Gateway Service, which connects applications to the VPN. Once up and running, the system is operated for flat-rate monthly charge.

The basic service includes multiple video conferencing, its control and management, and customer support. An optional feature enables users to easily book, change or cancel the conferences.

Some of the many advantages of NTT Com’s multipoint video conferencing system include:

1.The security and stability via NTT Com’s VPN without using Internet and robust data centers connected directly to NTT Com’s reliable high-speed backbone.

2.Easy, economical setup requiring just basic equipment, such as a camera and display at each end, unlike conventional systems that require a costly MCU and other equipment.

3.With the Application Gateway Service, broadband network lines are not needed for an MCU, and traffic volume is unlimited. Network design and costing are flexible.

4.One-stop management, including dedicated engineers standing by at NTT Com’s video conferencing operation center to provide rapid support and quick recovery in the case of any problem.

During 2010, the new video conferencing service will be expanded through connection to NTT Com’s global VPN services. Web conferencing via VPN is also planned to be offered.
