NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) today announced that it has applied to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications for permission to extend its 0033 international phone service to Inmarsat (international maritime satellite) terminal facilities (on ships and transportable type terminals). Services will commence soon after approval is obtained.
With this new service, world wide shipping business or deep sea fishery corporation will become to be able to communicate between ships in the open sea and Japan.
As a result of the new service, international phone calls can be made with Inmarsat terminal facilities via the Inmarsat satellite. Callers will be able to dial from continental Japan to ships with Inmarsat terminals and transportable Inmarsat terminal facilities (A, B, M, mini M) using 0033 international service. The new service virtually ensures worldwide communication. Digital mode communication, however, is not possible.

Users of the service will be required to pay only for the communication charges; no registration charge is necessary. Communication charges will vary, according to the receiver-side Inmarsat terminal. When transmitting to the same Inmarsat terminal facility, charges will be the same as with normal 0033 services, regardless of the transmitting facility (excluding Arcstar Direct and international public phones), transmitting time, and location of the receiving Inmarsat terminal. International communication charges for Inmarsat are included in the Home Discount and Corporate Discount packages.
