In conjunction with Disaster Week from August 30 to September 5, NTT Com, NTT East and NTT West allowed people to try out "Disaster Emergency Message Dial (171)" and "Disaster Emergency Broadband Message Board (Web 171)" services, which enable people to leave voice mail and Internet messages for family and friends when a disaster occurs.
To record a voice message, users dial 171, then 1 followed by their phone number. Concerned family and friends can hear the message by dialing 171, followed by 2 and the phone number. To post an Internet message, users need to go to the Web 171 site, https://www.web171.jp/, and enter their message and phone number. Messages can be viewed by typing in the phone number on the site.
The companies launched the voice mail and Internet services to ensure that people could confirm the safety of family and friends despite the network congestion that is likely to occur in the event of a major disaster.
Although the services are only available after a disaster occurs, people can use the services on a trial basis on the first of every month to learn how to use them.
