NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today that it will add a new speed to its IP Backbone Service in order to provide Japan with its first 1 Gbps Internet connection service. The new service menu will provide large-volume Internet access using 1000Base-LX
*1 technology for website operators who are registered with an NTT Com's data center. NTT Com has notified the Minister of Public Management of its intent to start the new service from the end of this month.
Since August 2000, NTT Com has been providing high-speed broadband IP backbone service with speeds raging from 1 Mbps to 100 Mbps for Internet content providers that handle international traffic.
The demand among data center users for high-volume Internet access service with speeds over 100 Mbps has been increasing in keeping with the proliferation of e-commerce and a rise in the number of Internet users overseas wishing to access Japan-based content. To meet such needs, NTT Com has decided to provide the aforementioned service speed.
NTT Com has been promoting the integration of its IP backbone used for this service, with the IP network of Verio Inc., which NTT Com acquired last August. The integrated network will enable the high-quality, stable provision of an IP network covering Japan, Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Customer equipment co-located
*2 in NTT Com data center will be directly connected to NTT Com's IP backbone network via a 1000Base-LX interface. Such technology will ensure high-quality communication, quick response and reliable service.

The service initially will be provided in Otemachi, Tokyo. Service areas will be expanded according to demand.

LAN specification for transmission speed of 1000 Mbps (IEEE802.3z). Network is connected via optical fiber with long wavelength of 1,300 nanometers.
*2: Co-location
A service whereby customer equipment, such as servers and routers are co-located within a special room at an NTT Com's data center. The room will be fully equipped with a fail-safe power source, air-conditioning, and 24-hour security.
*3: 95 percentile
The maximum figure derived by measuring the average traffic every five minutes for a month and then excluding the top 5%. Sudden increases in traffic will be calculated as the top 5%, therefore, this form of measurement is advantageous to customers.
