NTT Com Successfully Restores 90% of Customer Services within 48 hours after Taiwan Earthquake

Within 48 hours after the earthquake that hit the southwestern coast of Taiwan on the night of December 26, NTT Communications (NTT Com) had successfully restored almost all of its fully managed services and approximately 90% of all services affected. Services had been fully restored by 10:19 pm (Japan Standard Time) January 16.

When the earthquake struck at approximately 9:30pm (JST) on December 26, eight main undersea cables serving the region were damaged and it is estimated that 60% to 70% of the total network capacity of all carriers in the Far East region was affected.

In addition to the automatic re-routing function of its backbone network, NTT Com’s engineering team quickly decided to take several measures in order to minimize the impact to the customers’ network and restore communications traffic within the region. One such measure was the establishment of a new land route via mainland China bypassing the Taiwan coast to reach Hong Kong. Another was saving the customers using interconnected services provided with other partner carriers by sharing NTT Com’s fully managed infrastructure. Although it was an option, NTT Com decided against satellite use in restoring its services because the high quality required for the customers could not be guaranteed.

NTT Com fully utilized its extensive network infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region to restore the services and successfully transferred customer traffic to unaffected or alternative routes in a very short period of time. With its strong relationships with partner carriers established through Arcstar Carrier Forum* activities, the redesigning and provisioning processes were also exceptionally smooth.

The damaged cables are scheduled to be fully repaired by the end of February. In conjunction with the repairing of affected cables, NTT Com established additional routes including backup connecting North Asia and South East Asia to enhance business continuity abilities.
