Service Uses GPS Handsets to Record Movements for Blogs

TOKYO, JAPAN –– NTT Resonant Inc. and NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) today announced the launch of a unique blog-creation service that uses a GPS application in NTT DoCoMo mobile phones to track a user's movements throughout the day and then log the data in a blog, called “Kiseki” (log), to which the user can add their personal comments.

In addition to logging the times and locations (addresses) of the user's movements, the service can also provide information about places visited by the blogger. For example, if they go to a restaurant, the service can send the blogger information about restaurant's current specials to user's mobile phone.

The log information is sent to “Kiseki” in “machi goo,” a location-information mobile phone site provided by NTT Resonant. The blogger then posts the log information to their blog and adds their personal comments. The logs also can be accessed from PCs at http://lifelog.machi.goo.ne.jp.

A main idea behind the service is to attract the increasing number of former bloggers who have either stopped updating their blogs or altogether discontinued them due to the burden of keeping a daily diary. Thanks to GPS technology, however, the new service automates the tedious aspects of information recording, allowing bloggers to concentrate on the fun and creative process of writing about their daily lives.

To use the service, users need to download the “Kiseki” application from the machi goo site (http://machi.goo.ne.jp) and then set the application as their phone's screen saver. Application is free, but communication charges apply when using the blog. At the moment, handsets compatible with the service include GPS-capable models in the FOMA 905i, 904i and 903i series from NTT DoCoMo. The current service area covers Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures.
