DoTV Internet TV Portal Launches Digital Magazine Service

TOKYO, JAPAN - NTT Communication (NTT Com) and major Japanese publisher Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. jointly launched the DoTV Digital Magazine service for browsing digital editions of popular magazines with a TV connected to NTT Com's DoTV (http://dotv.jp) Internet TV portal.

The service, which is based on the NTT Com's PC-based service OCN Digital Magazine (digimaga.ocn.ne.jp), enables the user to read digital abridged versions of actual magazines on a Web-connected high-definition TV set, with page-turning performed easily with the TV's remote controller. At present, Sharp Corporation's AQUOS series of high-definition TVs (see attachment) are the only models offering remote controls that are specially equipped for these functions.

The service initially is offering a selection of 56 magazines (Japanese only) from 31 publisher. To encourage viewers to purchase the full issue, up to the 20 pages are viewable for free (Internet access charges are separate).

As a result of the service launch, NTT Com expects to further enhance its TV rebroadcast and video content service, operated by its wholly owned subsidiary NTT Plala, while Toppan Printing looks to expand its involvement with online publishing.

DoTV has been operating the DoTV Internet-TV portal since June 2006.
