
NTT Com’s OCN Internet access service becomes 10 years old on December 25, 2006, after starting its Open Computer Network service in December 1996 using best-effort typed transmission.
In September 1999, NTT Com became the first ISP provider to achieve nationwide access point coverage.
NTT Com was the first ISP in Japan to introduce virus checking in June 2001, and has remained at the forefront of Internet security enhancement. It has also been a pioneer in using the Internet to provide next-generation services such as IPv6.
As of the end of November, NTT Com had 5,830,000 subscribers, 80% of whom use broadband services such as optical networks. This was the highest subscription base in the field according to research conducted by the Japanese company MM Research.
