NTV and NTT Com broadcast NFL Super Bowl XL in high-definition via IP network to Japan
|
TOKYO, JAPAN Nippon Television Network Corporation (NTV) and NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) have succeeded in using an Internet-protocol (IP) transmission for a delayed high-definition (HD) broadcast in Japan of NFL Super Bowl XL, the championship game of American professional football, played in Detroit, Michigan on February 5.
The trial broadcast was fed from the U.S. at a transmission rate of approximately 70Mbps (MPEG2-TS) through NTT Coms Global Super Link, a global Ethernet transmission service, and was publicly broadcast via NTVs digital terrestrial broadcasting channel at midnight, February 6 (Japan standard time). (See attachment for details) The trial clearly demonstrated the possibility of commercially broadcasting HD transmissions from around the world via low-cost, general-purpose IP systems.
Demand for overseas content is expected to grow as HD digital terrestrial broadcasting, which began in Japan in 2003, becomes more popular. The transmission of HD video requires networks with more bandwidth than those for traditional standard-definition video, which is why IP networks provide a cost-effective solution. NTV and NTT Com expect the trials success to lead to the widespread commercialization of HD broadcasts via IP networks.
NTT Com launched the Global Super Link Service in Japan and the United States in July 2005. The virtual end-to-end Ethernet data transmission service leverages NTT Coms Tier 1 backbone for cost-effective, high-bandwidth transmissions.
