NTT Com Enhances Global Content Delivery Network Service
to Optimize Availability and Performance for High Traffic,
Global Web Sites

TOKYO, JAPAN NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) today announced that its Smart Content Delivery Service for content providers will be greatly enhanced with a global network of cache servers. The cache servers will initially be rolled out in Japan, the U.S. and Europe from 15th October, 2002, and in other parts of Asia later this year in cooperation with NTT Com-affiliated Internet service providers.
Launched in April 2000, the Smart Content Delivery has been offering both local and global server load balance targeting at the collocation users in Japan. The addition of reverse proxy cache servers is expected to further increase the service's content storage and delivery capabilities (please see Attachment).
As part of the new Smart Content Delivery, reverse proxy cache servers in Japan, the U.S. and Europe will be deployed on the Tier 1 NTT/VERIO Global IP Network, a broadband IP backbone that does not rely on other providers for global connectivity. This will allow NTT Com to offer a high-speed content delivery platform while achieving cost effectiveness.
With reverse proxy cache servers in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, content providers will no longer need to set up their own servers worldwide in order to achieve the global content distribution. The content distribution platform on the Tier 1 NTT/VERIO Global IP Network stores and delivers content from the cache server nearest to each end user, which optimizes both access and downloading time.
The new service incorporates border gateway protocol (BGP) anycast technology, which efficiently routes requests for domain name system (DNS) solutions* to the nearest DNS server, making maximum use of the NTT/VERIO Global IP Network, which is unified under a single autonomous system (AS). This advantage greatly reduces DNS look up time and improves total performance. According to third-party verifications, performance out-passes the global content delivery services of other major carriers.
System compatibility covers a variety of protocols. Besides static content like HTTP for text and still images, it is compatible with Windows Media Technology, Real and Quicktime. Both on-demand (archived) and live video delivery are possible.
The new service can be used with NTT Com's other value-added platforms for content solutions, such as STREAMWING content streaming and eMEDIAWING content authentication and settlement services, to create value chains that fully support delivery of Japanese streamed content worldwide. In addition, efficient delivery of foreign content throughout Japan is assured with NTT Com's vast domestic CDN network.
The NTT/VERIO Global IP Network, which contributes to the new service, offers value-added platform solutions like IPv6 Gateway Service for IPv6 native Internet connection and Global IP security Gateway Service for IP-VPN using IPSec protocol.
