NTT Communications to Provide
Arcstar IP Backbone Service for its Data Centers

NTT Communications (NTT Com) announced today that it will provide the Arcstar IP Backbone Service for users of NTT Com’s Data Center Service*1 from August 2000, enabling international Internet connection. The service will facilitate high-speed communication-via direct connection with the international Internet backbone network-for customers who operate Web sites for video and music distribution as well as for those engaged in general e-commerce.

The service will initially be provided in Otemachi, Tokyo. It will be expanded afterward in accordance with customer demand.

NTT Com has been providing Arcstar IP Backbone Service for Internet service providers as an international high-speed broadband Internet transit service. However, there has been a growing demand, particularly among data-center users, for an economic, high-speed Internet connection service that enables global high-speed broadband communications. This need is credited to the expansion of e-commerce and the rapid proliferation of video game and image distribution sites. Hence, NTT Com will begin providing the Arcstar IP Backbone Service for Web site operators via its own data centers.

NTT Com’s IP backbone will be integrated with Verio’s IP network following the merger of the two companies. This will enable the provision of a high-quality and stable IP network covering Japan, Europe, the Americas and Asia (please see Attachment 1). Also, by utilizing the global data centers of NTT Com group companies, as well as those of its partners, multinational companies will be able to enjoy global corporate network construction.

Outline

NTT Com will provide reliable, high-quality service by connecting customers’ communication equipment co-located*2 within NTT Com’s data center directly to NTT Com’s IP backbone network using a 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX interface. Therefore, customers will be spared from having to pay a network-access charge.

In addition, the service provides enriched traffic reports and customer support. It also enables high-quality, high-speed, and large-capacity data communication via direct connection to the IP backbone (see Attachment 2 for service image).

Speeds of 1 Mbps to 5 Mbps (of 1 Mbps increments) as well as 10 Mbps, 20 Mbps, 30 Mbps, 40 Mbps, 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps will be available.

Charges

NTT Communications today applied for approval to the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications to commence the service from August.
