NTT Communications to Launch
Arcstar Smart Content Delivery Service

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) today announced that it will introduce an Internet content delivery service for global content providers. Arcstar Smart Content Delivery Service allows providers to distribute contents quickly and reliably to end-users worldwide.

NTT Com will start the service soon after obtaining ministerial approval.

Arcstar Smart Content Delivery Service allows access to contents from domestic and overseas end-users to be automatically connected to the most optimal server, out of the servers hosted at many of NTT Com’s data centers. Such centers will be established both domestically and internationally. For example, when end-users access the same homepage, the U.S. end user will be connected to a server hosted in the United States. On the other hand, a Japanese user that accesses the same URL will automatically be connected to a server set within Japan. This will shorten access times as well as the time needed to download content, thereby simplifying and improving Internet usage.

The Arcstar Smart Content Delivery Service also monitors the state of the network and server conditions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In case of a breakdown, a request for access from an end user will automatically be routed to another server. This will secure and improve content delivery, as well as prevent declines in brand image that can be caused by breakdowns. Moreover, it will strengthen the content provider’s competitiveness in the e-commerce field.

NTT Com will provide a one-stop total solution for its customers’ Internet business activities through this service, as well as previously introduced Arcstar IP Backbone Service*1 and Arcstar Data Center Service*2.

Service Menus

In order to ensure server reliability and speed on behalf of content providers, NTT Com will provide a “local delivery service” as a basic function and a “global delivery service” as an additional function. Users will need to use the basic function to be able to use the additional function.

Basic Function: Local Delivery Service

–Improve reliability for customer servers at one site–

This service allows the servers to disperse server load and secure diffusion automatically when a customer has multiple servers at one data center. NTT Com’s equipment will supervise the server load periodically and automatically disperse the load. Also access attempts will automatically be routed to other servers in case of a breakdown, increasing reliability from end users.

Additional Function: Global Delivery Service

–Optimal content delivery–
For customers with multiple servers, the service will speed up the response time by automatically rerouting an end user’s access request to the closest server. When there is an access request from the end user to the customer’s URL, the service will calculate the delay time from the end user to the customer’s multiple data centers’ servers, the number of hops, and the load of the server itself. The service will then automatically select the most optimal server for the end user, and reroute the access request to that server, thereby speeding up response time.

–Improve reliability for customer servers at multiple sites–
In case of a breakdown, accesses will automatically be routed to other servers, increasing customer reliability.

Service Areas

The Arcstar Smart Content Service will commence in Japan and the United States. In the future, it will be introduced to Europe, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore and other countries.
