New Measures Introduced for Backup and Recovery

NTT Communications (NTT Com) introduced new emergency services on September 9 to help Arcstar Global Network Services users minimize the impact of natural disasters on their global networks.

The two new measures — network error real-time alerts and backup access-line switching — are offered as separate options. They are targeted at users of NTT Com's Arcstar-brand global network services for bandwidth, ATM, frame relay, IP-VPN and e-VLAN.

Network error alerts are designed for customers who manage their own network operations. Errors detected by NTT Com in the customer's global network are relayed via the web on a real-time, 24/7 basis to the customer who is informed of the time and location of the error. To ensure data security, a user ID and password are required to view the alert message.

The alert service costs US$850 per month and is available in more than 80 countries.

Backup access-line switching provides customers with the assurance that their network operations will be transferred to backup centers in the case of a natural disaster or blackout, at which time NTT Com will switch the access line after being contacted by the customer. Backup access is available in speeds ranging from 64 K to 150 Mbps.

The monthly charge is US$85 per access line, excluding line charges, and service is offered in 14 countries.
