NTT Australia - A Growing Presence

Chris Bouziannis, Sales & Marketing Director, NTT Australia

NTT Australia (NTT Aus) is becoming a recognised carrier in the Australian/New Zealand marketplace, as shown with its nomination as Best International Provider at the 2002 Australian Telecom Awards.

The Australian market is highly deregulated, with all major carriers present and competing for the business of U.S./European MNCs—companies such as Cisco Systems, Nokia, CitiBank, Bank of America and Unisys—and Asia-Pacific regional HQs, based in Sydney. NTT Aus focuses on the corporate segment that has requirements for Asia-wide coverage.

In January 2002 NTT Aus acquired 51% of Davnet Telecommunications (DavTel) to make it a 100% subsidiary. After final purchase, the name DavTel changed to NTT Australia IP (NTT Aus IP). NTT Aus now covers the Australian marketplace by providing clients with a high-quality network to corporate customers.

The NTT Aus IP network is a 100% "Packet Switched" network, fully convergent, delivering high-speed Internet and data services to large and medium-sized businesses, with company offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

NTT Aus IP offers integrated and scalable data services delivered through in-building broadband communications networks that it owns and/or operates. In addition to high-speed Internet access, NTT Aus IP offers enhanced services, such as Australian domestic IP-VPN, hosting and co-location.

In July 2002 NTT Australia's offices merged with those of NTT Aus IP, increasing the number of NTT Aus Group employees to over 100. The integration of the two groups has been very smooth, with the sales team more focused in selling total solutions to customers. One success story is the customer Susquehanna Pacific. This customer currently enjoys an IP-VPN (MPLS) network with us, with ports in Sydney, Tokyo and Seoul. In August 2002 this customer also ordered Internet coverage from NTT Aus IP for its offices across Australia.

In June 2002 NTT Communications signed a Wholesale Agreement with Telecom New Zealand (TNZ). In this agreement NTT Aus will carry all of TNZ data customers to Asia using the Arcstar Network and in return TNZ will extend Arcstar's data coverage to New Zealand and Pacific Islands such as Fiji.
