Japan Telecom, Korea Telecom, Kyushu Electric Power and NTT Communications (NTT Com) announced the start of the Korea-Japan Cable Network (KJCN) on March 23, opening up a new chapter in the history of Asian telecommunications.

KJCN, the Asia-Pacific's first non-repeater cable system, handles 2.88 terabits of information per second, the equivalent of 35,000 telephone lines. Users receive service at the speed of 50 Gbps.

To commemorate this important milestone, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited the cable landing station in Pusan, Korea on the launch day. Two 250-km undersea cables stretch from Pusan to separate landing points in Fukuoka, Japan.

The four companies signed an agreement to construct the cable in May 2001 to meet the fast-growing demand for broadband telecommunications between Japan and Korea.

The network comes just in time for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, which begins May 31. The jointly hosted World Cup, itself an historic event, is expected to deepen ties and expand communication between the two countries.
