NTT Com CEO Speaks at Broadband Summit

Mr. Suzuki delivers speech at Broadband Summit

NTT Communications (NTT Com) CEO Masanobu Suzuki spoke about how telecom operators can survive in the Internet Age during a keynote speech delivered at the inaugural Broadbanding Global Summit in Japan on October 22, 2002.

Suzuki emphasized that it will not be easy for telecom operators to raise revenue vis-à-vis IP services. In a breakdown of NTT Com's revenue, for example, increases in revenue from data & IP services had not yet fully compensated for declines in voice-based revenue. High-quality network services require substantial investment, he noted, yet the market generally demands low prices for related services.

Suzuki sees big opportunities for market development, however. He noted that global IP traffic has been increasing threefold to fourfold annually. MNCs that choose to enter East Asia will find especially promising markets for their services, he predicted.

Suzuki emphasized that the traditional business model of offering individual products separately has proven to be unsuccessful. Instead, he explained, telecom operators must provide one-stop integrated solutions tailored to individual customers, emphasizing quality, capacity and security.

The summit was held in Tokyo on October 22 and 23. Some 150 telecom industry executives attended to discuss new opportunities in the telecom market.
