NTT Communications Group to Join World IPv6 Launch

TOKYO, JAPAN - NTT Communications Corporations (NTT Com) and three of its subsidiaries, NTT Plala, NTT PC Communications and NTT America, jointly announced today that they will participate in World IPv6 Launch, a global event marking the permanent start of IPv6 services on June 6. By participating in the event, the NTT Com Group aims to support the rapid proliferation of IPv6 and compatibility with IPv6 technologies.

World IPv6 Launch will mark the day when leading Internet service providers, hardware makers, online service operators and others permanently enable IPv6 on their websites, products and services from June 6 (9am JST onwards). The NTT Com Group will participate as an online service operator, the same capacity under which it participated in World IPv6 Day, a 24-hour trial public deployment of IPv6 on June 8, 2011.

NTT Com began operating its World IPv6 Launch site (www.ntt.com/ipv6_e/data/event.html) today to introduce IPv6-enabled sites offered by the company and three subsidiaries.

The NTT Com Group has played a key role in the evolution of IPv6, adopting the IPv6 basic protocol of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1995, serving as a core member of the IPv6 information appliance experiment in Japan in 2001 and participating in state-sanctioned projects in the EU, such as 6NET.

The NTT Com Group launched its OCN IPv6 Tunneling Service in Japan in 2001 as the world’s first, fully commercial IPv6 service, offering IPv6-compatible versions of its services from an early stage. The group also helped to pioneer IPv6 services by incorporating IPv6 technologies in its Hikari-TV video broadcasting service, which NTT Plala provides to two million subscribers, and by launching the first commercial IPv4/IPv6 dual service in the U.S.A.
