What is the eco-ICT Mark?

eco-ICT Mark

The eco-ICT Mark is a certification symbol established by the ICT Ecology Guideline Council of Japan.

Telecommunication service providers are permitted to display the eco-ICT Mark and widely publicize their commitment to conducting proper environmental activities, according to the status of their environmental activities, after performing a careful self-assessment of CO2 emission reductions and other environmental activities.

The NTT Communications Group participates in eco-ICT Mark initiatives.

We have set numerical targets for fiscal 2020 to help prevent global warming as we conduct concrete initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions.

3 In order to raise ecological awareness, is the voluntary ecological action plan documented and disseminated internally and outside the company? Also, does the company carry out activities to inform and educate its employees? Is the company working to raise ecological awareness?

NTT Communications discloses the voluntary ecological action plan both internally and outside the company through its CSR Report and corporate website. At the same time, we aggregate and disclose ('make visible') monthly data on actual electricity and paper consumption in our workplaces as well as on waste disposal. By keeping the company members informed in these ways, NTT Communications continuously strives to educate its employees.

In addition, NTT Communications encourages participation in study sessions held by the NTT Group for environmental personnel through the Environmental Protection Framework of the NTT Communications Group

4 Does the company disclose information about the implementation of activities and achievement of targets set forth in its voluntary ecological action plan, along with data such as CO2 emission reductions?

NTT Communications discloses information about the implementation of activities and the extent of achievement of its targets both internally and outside the company through its CSR Report and corporate website.

Efforts relating to procurement 5 In regard to ICT equipment and data center services, has the company prepared a procurement standard that takes energy conservation into consideration? Is procurement carried out in accordance with the standard?

We have formulated the NTT Communications Guidelines for Green Procurement based on the NTT Group Energy Efficiency Performance Guidelines. By following these green procurement guidelines, we are promoting the procurement of energy efficient ICT equipment.

6 Is the company cognizant of energy conservation in procuring office equipment, supplies and logistics (e.g., green purchasing)?

We conduct green purchasing in the form of applying the NTT Communications Guidelines for Green Procurement to the purchases of business equipment used in our offices, including the procurement of eco-friendly office paper, among other items.

Promotion regime 7 In relation to efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, has the company assigned a person or department to be responsible for such matters?

In an effort to reduce CO2 emissions, we have established the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Working Group within the Global Environmental Protection Sub-committee, whose secretariat is the Environmental Protection Office. Using this structure, we are conducting company-wide CO2 emission reduction activities.

8 Is there a regime in place using internal audits or other means to keep appropriate track of the implementation of measures and achievement of targets set forth in the voluntary ecological action plan?

The Global Environmental Protection Sub-committee convenes twice a year, in principle, to review the overall activities of each working group, which have been set up by environmental theme, as well as share information.

Furthermore, we have obtained the ISO 14001 environmental management system certification, and implement internal audits once a year. At the same time, we continuously improve environmental management systems through reviews by external agencies and through renewal of our ISO 14001 certification.

Other ecological activities 9 Are ecological-friendly efforts being made other than activities to save energy?

NTT Communications is using renewable energy including solar power at its data centers and telecommunications buildings while at the same time introducing rooftop gardens and green walls in an effort to mitigate the "heat island" effect. Recognizing the importance of biodiversity conservation, the Company is also reusing water and undertaking a variety of measures both in Japan and overseas with the aim of preserving vegetation and the environment in general.

10 Is the company involved in ecological preservation activities in collaboration with local communities?

We conduct various environmental protection activities in collaboration with local NPOs and other local community members. Projects include rice terrace revitalization in Chichibu, clean-up activities on Mt. Fuji and forest revitalization activities.
